Song Review – 你是我的眼 (“You’re My Eyes”
By: Ricky Hsiao (Hsiao Huang Chi)

Today, I would like to introduce you a song, name “You’re My Eyes”. This song is written by Ricky Hsiao (Hsiao Huang Chi). He is a blind Taiwanese Tai-pop and Mandopop artist. He was born at 22 September 1976 in Banciao, Taiwan. Ricky had congenital cataracts which cause him to be blind at birth. When he was 4 years old, his blind had partially cured by surgery. However, due to overuse of his vision, he lost all his vision at the age of 15.

Although he totally lost his eyesight, he thought positively and never gave up. He accepted his destiny bravely and wrote a lot of songs.  Besides, he is musically gifted. He is able to play guitar, saxophone, drums and so forth.  He has written many wonderful, heart-warming songs.

TRANSLATION

If I can see
I can distinguish day and night easily
I can take your hand accurately in the crowds

If I can see
I can drive a car and fetch you to everywhere
I can give you a surprise by hugging you from behind

If I can see
Maybe life will totally different
Maybe the thing that I like, I love will different

The black what I see is not black
How is the white that you mention
The blue sky that people say
Is the sky beyond the white cloud that has been in my memories
I look at your face
But I see nothing
Is that God put a curtain in front of my eyes
Forget to open it

You are my eyes
Let me realise the changes of four seasons
You are my eyes
Bring me pass through the crowds
You are my eyes
Guide me read the books

Because you are my eyes
Let me see this world in front of my eyes
It is just in front of my eyes

“You’re My Eyes” is one of the songs that wrote by him in year 2002. This is a lyric and a very touching classic song. Through this song, he described his feeling be a blind man. He feels that if he can see, he can do a lot of thing that normal people do. He can easily distinguish day and night, drives a car traveling around everywhere, and even can protect a people. We cannot understand his feeling as we can see when we are born. However, Ricky Hsiao can only see something by undergo eye surgery but unfortunately, he totally lost his vision 10 years after the surgery.

Ricky Hsiao mentions that if he is not a blind person, maybe his life will totally different from now. The things that he likes and loves will totally different if he can see. He is a blind man, the thing that he always sees is not black colour, but it is dark. He does not know what is white colour. When he talks to someone and looks at his face, he sees nothing. He makes a joke that maybe the god put a curtain in front of his eyes and forgets to open it. The things what he writes on his lyric is the feeling of a blind man. A blind man cannot do a simple thing as normal people because they cannot see. He hopes he can see and lives with a normal life.

Moreover, the purpose he writes this song is to appreciate his mother who takes care of him although he is blind. His mother accompanies him, acts as his eyes, tell him everything that he does not know. For instance, he can know the changes of four seasons, his mother lead along him, read the book for him, tell him everything in the world. Therefore, he seems can see everything although he is blind. He hopes he can see once a day. This is what he wish, a small desire that a normal person will not hope.

In conclusion, after listen this song, “You’re My Eyes”, I feel that we should appreciate everything that we own right now. For example, we should not waste the food because there are a lot of people out of food in this world such as the people in Africa. Ricky Hsiao hopes he can see once a day, but the people who can see do eye surgery due to beautiful purpose. Some people lost their home due to natural disaster, but the people who have home feel that their home is too small. From his creation, I have learnt that we should not be greedy and should learn to be content. Content is happiness. On the others hand, we should show understanding and sympathy for the person who face adversity, mutilation and incomplete. We should judge another person’s feeling by one’s own so that our community will full of love.

Thank you.

TEE KOK SHENG Food Review (CHICKEN DONER)

Eat healthy and delicious food is important for me. I like to eat the food which is delicious. Although there is a lot of food stalls in UTM, I prefer ‘chicken doner’ which is sold in Istanbul Restaurant at Arkeb Cengal, UTM Johor Bahru.

There is a lot of food sold in Istanbul Restaurant such as beef omelette, beef donor, omlette, chicken tantuni, chicken potato and so forth. Among these food, i prefer 'chicken doner'. I choose this food as my food review based on some reasons.

In my opinion, ‘chicken doner’ is healthy for us. We can order ‘chicken doner’ with rice or with bread. Normally, I will order ‘chicken doner’ with rice because I will feel full if eat with rice. The rice that they use is high quality rice. This rice is healthy for us and it is softer than others. Besides, it tastes delicious.
On the others hand, I feel worth if I eat ‘chicken doner’ with rice. This food only cost RM 5 per plate. I feel that it is very cheap compared to other Arabic food. Moreover, compared to other foods with the same price, I will feel hungry after eating it. However, after eating ‘chicken doner’ with rice, I feel full and satisfy. That is why I say this food is worth for me.

On top of that, eating ‘chicken doner’, a kind of Arabic food, I can know more about their culture. Why I say so? There is a lot of foods sold in this stall. I will order the food that without beef because I do not eat beef at all. One day, I saw a man ordered a plate of beef omelette. There were two eggs on top of the rice and it looked nice and delicious. As usual, I ordered chicken doner with rice, but this time I asked the boss to add an egg on top of my rice. The boss rejected my request and told me there was no this kind of food in their menu. On that time, I thought he can also added an egg on top of it although it really do not list in their menu. So, I asked him to do so. The boss rejected me again and told me this kind of eating habit was not in their culture. Finally I realize the reason he don’t want to add an egg on chicken doner.

In conclusion, I choose chicken doner as my food review because it is delicious, healthy, worth and we can know other races’ culture. The price is not expensive as students are afford to buy it. The most important is the rice is healthy for us. You can have a try.

TEE KOK SHENG Film Review (HERO)

Hero (2002) is a film that is known as the chinese martial chivalry film, which i a traditional Chinese genre. However, how this film differs from the others is that it uses the narrative method known as a ‘flashback’. The story starts with Wu Ming telling his story, allowing narrative time to rewind. But there is a twist since it become apparent that Wu Ming seems to be not a reliable narrator. It makes the audiences to experience the same story twice with different consequences in the story as the story are ‘re-told’. Towards the end of the film, the story returns to the story in parallel, which is happening to Wu Ming in the palace.

The director, Zhang Yimou uses colours to tie in different segments of the story. On the other hand, each of them also contains a different story. The colour of the palace is black, enlivened only by splashes of red. This forms the geginning and the end of the story and the overall feel of this sequence extends into the first fight between Wu Ming and Chang Kong.  Red dominates the first version of the story by Wu Ming, blue for the second version of the story, green is the story which covers the failed assassination. White is the last colour, dominating the deaths of Fei Xue and Can Jian, and alternating with the black sequences back in the palace.

Other than the way the story is told, the theme of the movie is different as well compared to the common chinese martial chivalry film. Hero is about the love and compassion of the heroes of the world, their magnanimity, nationalisme and the international spirit. These characters are willing to sacrifice for their country.

The film starts with a brief story saying that China was one divided into 7 kingdoms that warred with each other frequently. It took one man to conquer all the kingdoms and unite the land. The opening caption introduces the argument of the movie: “people die for all sorts of reasons, for friendship, for love, for an ideal… and people kill for these same reasons also.” Wu Ming is lead to meet the king of Qin in the palace. It is announced that Wu Ming is being honoured for killing for killing 3 assassins from the kingdom of Zhao, namely Chang Kong, Fei Xue and Can Jian. Wu Ming presents a silver spear-head and two swords, and is rewarded with the right to approach the king within 10 paces.

His story is then found fake by the King. In the scenes depicting the king's version of the story, everyone wears blue. Wu Ming presents himself to Can Jian and Fei Xue. He displays a phenomenal technique that can kill everyone and everything within 10 paces of him, saying he used this technique to kill Chang Kong. Wu Ming explains he can use this to kill the king but the only way to get close enough is to collect the reward for killing Can Jian and Fei Xue. Wu Ming says he only has to kill one of them in front of the soldiers and they will believe his claim that he killed them both. Can Jian and Fei Xue must decide which one of them will die by his sword. The next day Can Jian and Fei Xue are walking towards the camp when Can Jian attempts to injure Fei Xue. She is faster than him and she injures him instead, saying she is going to die and wants only for him to continue living. He is now too injured to stop her and so they have a tearful farewell.

Fei Xue goes to the camp, fights Wu Ming, and dies. Wu Ming then shows up at a lake where Can Jian is mourning Flying Snow. Out of honor, Can Jian attacks Wu Ming; they fly over the lake as they fight. They are evenly matched, but Can Jian stops fighting, gives Wu Ming his sword and allows Wu Ming to leave.
Wu Ming admits that he is a native of the Zhao state, he also confesses that he defeated Chang Kong without killing him and asked Fei Xue and Can Jian to cooperate by faking a duel as well. Sword has waited for Wu Ming on his way to Qin after his false duel with Fei Xue. He told Wu Ming that the only way to achieve peace was to unite the states under a common dynasty, namely that of Qin, which alone had the ability to do so, thus revealing why Can Jian gave up his earlier assassination attempt.  When Wu Ming realizes the wisdom of Can Jian’s words, he abandons his mission and spares the King. Urged by the court, the King reluctantly executes Wu Ming in the palace.

This is a nice movie. It has many outstanding special visual design.I like this movie very much.

Song Review
Tajuk: Bad day – Daniel Powter

Tajuk filem: Pendekar Bujang Lapok

Food Review – Cockles
In Malacca, there are many delicious food. I think the famous is the cockles that located at the Jalan Bunga Raya. The name of the food stall is “Kerang Rebus Lwei”, but normally they called it as “Longkang Siham”. Why it called as “Longkang Siham”? Because the stall is located beside the longkang.

What is the special for this stall is customer are enjoy their food by sitting on the low chair and table. This let people think about the ancient times’ people who enjoy the food by sitting on the low chair and table.

There are many types of seafood including cockles, snails, clams, lala, mussels and so on. My friends and I have ordered many types of seafood. The cockles look very bloody but there are still many people like to eat. One of my friend ate the bloody cockles unstoppable. Haha. But I didn’t eat much of cockles because I am not dare to eat the half-cooked cockles. Oh, the cockles still have separate into 3 types of cooking, there are half-cooked, normal, and full-cooked.

Since I am not dare to eat the cockles so much but I ate the lala mostly. The lala looks like very clean and non-bloody as the cockles.

In the beginning, we have ordered every types of seafood each. The snails, clams and mussels are the least people like to eat. My friends and I have ordered the cockles and the lala once and once again.

The sauces that homemade by the tauke himself are very tasty. With the sauces, the seafood are more tasty and delicious.

The price for each plate of seafood is RM2. The business hour for the “Longkang Siham” is from 6pm to 11pm and it rest on Tuesday.

Although it seems like dirty because the stall is beside the longkang but there are still many people visit it perhaps the delicious food. Other than that, the stall have been visited by the television food programme. So, it is classified as a well-known food stall in Malaysia. You may visit it when you go to Malacca next time. Hope you enjoy the food very much. J

Film Review – Curse of the Golden Flower

Curse of the Golden Flower is a Chinese epic drama film written and directed by Zhang Yimou. This film was released on year 2006. It was the most expensive Chinese film to that time. Jay Chou who is the famous singer and song composer nowadays had composed a song for this film by the name “菊花台”(Chrysanthemum Terrace).
The film starts with the Emperor(Chow Yun-fat) returns from his military campaigns with his second son and general, Prince Jai(Jay Chou), in order to celebrate the holiday with his family. The yellow chrysanthemum flowers fill the imperial palace on the eve of Zhong Yang.
On a day, the Emperor found his first son, Crown Prince Wan(Liu Ye) had an illicit affair with the Empress(Gong Li). The Crown Prince Wan is the stepson of the Empress, who was born between the Emperor and his dead first wife. Actually the Emperor first wife, Jiang Shi(Chen Jin) has not dead yet, she had married with the imperial doctor Jiang Yiru. The Crown Prince Wan is not interested with the Empress and wishes to run away with his secret lover, Jiang Chan(Li Man), the daughter if the imperial doctor Jiang Yiru. The Emperor take action by ordering the imperial doctor and his daughter to poison the Empress’s medicine in order to want his wife’s health stay poor.
Day by day, after the Empress have told his son, Prince Jai about the action took by his father, the Emperor, Prince Jai becomes worried over his mother, the Empress’s ill health and wonders why she seems to be obsessed with golden chrysanthemums. The Empress summons Prince Jai and reveals that she planning to overthrow the Emperor. She asks him to lead his soldiers but Prince Jai hesitates that he cannot betray his own father. However, he has change his mind because he see his mother who is suffering from poisoned medicine.
Other than that, the Empress also hires a mysterious woman to find out the poison’s species. Finally she found it out successfully and reveals that it is Persian Black Fungus. Unfortunately, Crown Prince Wan captures the woman and takes her to the Emperor right after she meet the Empress. The woman had been identified by the Emperor. The Emperor decided not to punish her and promote the imperial doctor, Jiang Yiru and his family to governor of the nearby province of Suzhou.
Crown Prince Wan is sad that the doctor’s daughter is leaving and he runs after their convoy and speaks to her, and heard that the Empress has woven ten thousands of scarves adorned with chrysanthemum motifs, sending them to a general of the imperial army afterwards. Crown Prince Wan rushes back to the palace and confronts the Empress, who confesses that she is planning a coup d’etat. Crown Prince Wan stabs himself with a dagger.
The doctor’s family is attacked by the Emperor’s assassins. The doctor is killed but the doctor’s wife and daughter flee on horseback and head to the palace successfully. The Chrysanthemum ceremony is interrupt by the doctor’s wife and his daughter and demand the Emperor to give an answer about why he wants them whole family to be killed. At the same time, the Empress reveals that the doctor’s wife is same woman as the Emperor dead first wife, which means that the doctor’s daughter and Crown Prince Wan are half-siblings all the time. The doctor’s daughter was very sad and flees the palace but cut down by the assassins.
Suddenly, the youngest son, Prince Yu kills Crown Prince Wan with a sword and after that he summons a group of his own soldiers to kill the Emperor. He reveals that he knew about the Empress’s affair and has been planning to supplant the Emperor. However, the Emperor’s assassins descend from the ceiling and killed the Prince Yu’s soldiers easily. The Emperor beats Prince Yu to dealth with his belt.
At the same time, ten thousand soldiers wearing golden armor and golden chrysanthemum emblems storm the palace with the leading of Prince Jai. They easily come into the palace’s inner square, trampling the golden flowers laid out for the ceremony. Unfortunately, the massive silver shields block their way in and thousand of the silver armored archers appear on the walls surrounding them. The golden armor soldiers try to fight but the silver shields is impenetrable and forced them to retreat but they founf the gates behind them has been blocked. All of them are dead under the archers except the Prince Jai. Actually Crown Prince Wan had told the Emperor and he had set the trap beforehand.
The Prince Jai was captured and brought to see the Emperor. Meanwhile, the countryard is cleaned up with efficiency by a legion of servants. The dead bodies had being removed, floors being scrubbed and laid with carpets, and pots of yellow chrysanthemums replaced. It makes it seem like nothing had happened before that. The Chrysanthemum Festival begins as scheduled at the midnight.
The Emperor speaks to Prince Jai and the Empress on the terrace’s ceremonial table. Prince Jai is offered forgiveness by his father, the Emperor on the condition that he should serve the poisoned medicine to the Empress everyday. Prince Jai refuses and apologises to his mother, the Empress and suicide with a sword. The poisoned cup is still offered to the Empress on the time, she shrieks and slaps it away. The story ended with the spilled medicine is shown instantly corroding the table’s engraved wooden chrysanthemum.
In my opinion, the chrysanthemum is the most attractive things in the film. The chrysanthemum design is very conspicuous and I like it very much. The film brought out some moral values that we should respect to our parents, husband or wife and so on. The film also shows that the people in the dynasty and the things happened in the palace in the ancient times. The art designs for overall film are awesome. I think that the director Zhang Yimou had put many effort on this film. The film had won a lot of prizes in 26th Hong Kong Film Awards in 2007 with the best actress(Gong Li, the Empress), the art direction, the best costume and make up design, and the best original song( “菊花台” by Jay Chou). The golden armor costume and the golden chrysanthemum are the major things in this film, I like it very much. I strongly recommend all of you to watch this film because it is really beautiful and attractive art design. You will not regret after watched it. Hope all of you enjoy the movie very much. J

TEH HER TEE A13KE0278 (FILM REVIEW - THE ROAD HOME)

THE ROAD HOME

The film that i want to review is我的父亲母亲(Wo de fu qin mu qin) or THE ROAD HOME which was directed by Zhang Yimou. First of all, let us discuss about the director of the film. Zhang Yimou is a Chinese film director, film producer, writer and actor, and former cinematographer. He was born in 14th November 1951 and is counted amongst the fifth generation of Chinese film maker, having made his directorial debut in 1987 with Red Sorghum. Zhang had won numerous awards and recognitions, with Best Foreign Film nominations for Ju dou in 1990 and Raise the red lantern in 1991, Silver Lion and Golden Lion prizes at the Venice Film Festival, Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. In 1993, he was a member of the jury at the 43rd Berlin International Film Festival. Zhang directed the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, which received considerable International acclaim. These are some of the history and biodata of Zhang.

Secondly, let us discuss about the plot of the film. THE ROAD HOME is the story of a country girl and a young teacher falling in love, and the teacher's death many years later that brings their son back from the big city for the funeral. The film begins in black and white in present-day China when the son returns to his village from the city upon hearing of his father's death. His mother, Zhao Di, insists upon following the tradition of carrying the coffin back to their remote village by foot so that her husband's spirit will remember its way home. His father, Luo Changyu, came to the village as the teacher. Immediately, Zhao Di became infatuated with him and he with her. Thus began a courtship which consisted mostly of the exchange of looks and glances between the two. Unfortunately, the courtship was interrupted when Luo was summoned by the government to return to the city. Zhao Di's heart was broken; she insisted on waiting for him in the snow and fell so ill that the villagers thought she would die. However, upon hearing news of her illness, the teacher was able to sneak back to the village and Zhao Di, in tears, welcomed the sight of her beloved. Still, their love would not be consummated for a few years more because the teacher was kept away from the village as punishment for having left his assignment in the city without permission. Returning to the present day, and black and white, the son realizes how important this ritual of carrying the coffin back to village is to his mother, Zhao Di, and he agrees to make all necessary arrangements to fulfill her wish. He is told by the mayor of the village that it might be difficult to find enough porters to carry the father home, as there are few young able men left in the village. The mayor and the son reach an agreement on the price to be paid to the porters. But when the procession sets out, more than 100 people show up to help carry home the casket of the man who was their teacher through various generations in the village. The mayor returns the money to the son, as no one will accept payment for doing what they consider to be an honor rather than a task.

Let us move on to the award of the film THE ROAD HOME. This film had won a lot of award like 2000 Golden Rooster Awards for the best picture and the best director, 2000 Hundred Flowers Awards for best film award, 2000 Berlin International Film Festivals which included Silver Bear for Jury Grand Prix, Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and Golden Bear, 2000 Ljubljana International Film Festival for the audience award. The above stated are some of the important awards that won by this film. Besides these, there are still a lot of awards that won by this year after the year of 2000.

In my opinion, THE ROAD HOME is a film that about love and traditional culture of Chinese. This film was about a country girl who brave to express her love to a teacher, which reflect that in this world not only men can expressing their feeling towards women but women also can do so. Besides, this film also taught me that we have to appreciate every relationship with the other one, not only love but family relationship also. This is because at the middle part of the movie when the teacher was in love with the  country woman, they have to seperate again due to some reasons. Both of them are so hard to be together but only because of the government they have to be seperated again. This had told us that we really have to appreciate what we are having now. Furthermore, This film also taught me that no wonder what races we are we also have to maintain our traditional culture in order to maintain procreation. This is to avoid that our traditional culture to be away from our next generation.

In conclusion, I feel that this is a touched film of the love between the country lady and the teacher. Besides of touch, this film also taught me a lot of things such as we have to appreciate what we had now and also have to maintain our traditional culture from generation to generation.
I hope that you all will enjoy the film.
Thank you :)
