YEANG MENG HERN A1KE0293 -- FOOD REVIEW

Food Review: Asam Laksa (Penang)

On the 14th of November, I went to Penang for the Penang Bridge Marathon 2014. Well, everyone knew that Penang is a food paradise and of course I would not miss the chance to try the foods. I went to have a dinner at Gurney Drive. There are a lot of food stall there like cha kuey tiao, asam laksa, rojak, har mee and so all. However, I chose asam laksa as my dinner.

A short introduction about Asam Laksa. Asam Laksa is generally thought to be a creation of the Chinese who immigrated to the British Straits in Malaysia during the 15th century. Known as the Peranakan, most of the immigrants were of Hokkien descent and came from South China. Even the origin of the word "laksa" is debated. The word lakhshah denotes a type of noodle in Hindi; however, laksa sounds similar to a Chinese word meaning "spicy sand" - fitting because of laksa's gritty texture.

The asam laksa is at Gurney Drive Hawker Centre. It is located at Gurney Hawker Centre at Persiaran Gurney. The reason I chose to eat this asam laksa from the other variety of food is because the smell attracted me when I passed by. It smelled so good and make me wanted to have it. It was served in the hot bowl of soury based soup with scrumptious of sardine and other condiments with it such as lemongrass, garlic, shallots, chili, and a long list of other seasonings blend flawlessly for a complex taste. The asam laksa is pretty good to have. It was also served with a spoon of a sauce which is made from prawn. The sauce is sweet in taste. It is a must to mix with the sauce and the asam laksa to eat with. The rice noodle served is called “ lai fun “ in Mandarin. The “lai fun” is made up of grain. It is smooth and soft to eat. It tasted great with the sour and salty soup. One bowl of this great laksa was just cost you RM 5.00. It is worth to eat it. If you have a chance, you can have a try on it. It really taste good!
